Why don't you just remove the AC clutch relay in your electrical box under the hood, That way when you use the AC and the defroster the compressor wont be engaged anyway. There is no sense in doing all these goofy belt configurations.

I have had the same issue before, I love my 1996 Jp cherokee Country, I have the forest green color =).
I can almost guarantee you the fuse blew. IIRC its the lower row of fuses in the fuse box under the drivers side dash, its pretty easy to access, I replaced mine with a 25 or 30 amper and...
