    Booze makes people do some really stupid things but I personally dont buy it as a get out of jail free card, If he was sober enough to tell her he had a girlfriend once, he could of put the brakes on if he had wanted to. He was a willing player so yes - He is a cheat.

    Well, for hiking and backpacking your best bet is to get a frame for it. I would take it to a sporting goods store like REI or whatever you have in your area, show your backpack to a salesperson and ask them what you can get for it.
