Can't answer all your questions but I can tell you that one of the few people I have struggled to over take was riding an electric bike. The chap was peddaling as well but it was clear that the motor was making a big difference to his speed. Obviously they are not much good if the battery dies...

As cyclo cross bikes are lighter and more aerodynamic than mountain bikes, why don't they get used more in off road events? Other than no suspension, what is to stop me using one in place of a mountain bike in a duathlon event (run, cycle, run)

Contact the Cyclist Touring Club and other more traditional cycling groups, they may be able to give you some contact details. I also have a 1980's vintage bike, however I'm glad to say it is in good condition, and most parts are still available anyway. In your case it might be worth visiting...
