If your goldfish has SBD then fasting him for a few days should cure him. Tell your friend to feed them less.

He could just be getting use to his new surroundings. He should have at least 2.5 gallons, a heater, and a filter to keep him thriving and happy.

When I was little I kept some goldfish in a bowl(huge mistake) and they died in 2 days.
