    does it damage cars to put in the wrong type of oil?

    Are you actually changing the oil? Or, are you just checking the oil and topping it off if low? If you're just topping it off, it doesn't matter. If it's only a little low, it will be diluted with the other oil. If it's very low, then any oil is better than running it low.
