Where to get Census Records for Free?

I've been doing some genealogy research, and I can only seem to find sites where you have to pay for census records, which I thought were public domain. Where can I find them for free? I'd love to have an index on said site as well.

Any public library in the area of interest, any Mormon library, state archives, county courthouses, national archives, city historical societies, etc. I have been into genealogy for years, and have accessed all these sources with success. Good luck to you.
