Zoe Saldana - best actress for Avatar????? really?

Considering she features ZILCH in it, and her character was 100% cg.. i can't quite comprehend why she got best actress, for what is effects an actress who was a voice over artist and a visual reference for animators.

Yes there was mo-cap involved, but facial animation and stuff like that (which really sells the performance) is 100% down to the animators. I think its a poor choice.

I actually think her performance is brilliant. For me, she was the best character in the film, and 'features' only slightly less than the main character of Jake.

The motion capture used in Avatar is different from that which has been used in other films as far as I am aware, it's more advanced and does project things like the actor's facial expressions onto the CG character.

Empire awarRAB

LOL. Soon as I saw the thread title I thought 'That's gotta be the Empire AwarRAB'.

As I mentioned in a much earlier thread, Empire have been championing Saldana to be recognised for this role so I suspect there was an element of people voting the way they were 'told' to. You can consider these awarRAB to be as serious or as meaningless as you like. In the pantheon of awarRAB ceremonies, I imagine it's a great night out, but completely irrelevant.

I like Empire magazine, but I am disappointed it gave so many awarRAB to this quite average film, when even the Oscars rightfully favoured more decent offerings (out of those nominated..)

Avatar deserves:
AwarRAB for technology - yes
AwarRAB for film/acting - no

i thought she was very good, the 'heart' of the film

and her performance and facial movements are solely down to her..

andy serkis was the same as gollum - a great performance. the bit where he argues with himself is the strongest of the whole trilogy

as for zoe - what do you mean she was hardly in the film???

I thought she was good too. Don't know why so many people are so keen to criticise the actors for interaction with green screen and other technologies. It's harder than it looks to be convincing when nothing is actually there.

Why do people think that if you look angsty in a 'drama' film and cry buckets that is the sort of stuff that deserves awarRAB. I don't get it, both are difficult in different ways. The acting in Avatar was very good overall and i agree with the poster above who was saying how brilliant Andy Serkis was as gollum, why didn't he get an award?

Are they though? My argument against recognising CG/ mo-cap/ greenscreen performances in awarRAB is that you don't know where the human element enRAB and the technological tweaking begins. Maybe all the body and facial movements are her own, but if Cameron thought her eyes weren't sad enough, or her body language wasn't expressive enough, it would have been incredibly easy for him to alter it.

True, but that's not really anything to do with his performance per s

I wasn't familiar with Zoe's previous work, but I have seen Sigourney Weaver before, and it seemed to me I could recognise her performance through the CGI.

Frankly, I am doubtful that some CGI computer geek would know better how to pitch an emotional scene than Ms Weaver.
