a battery of 10V is in series with a resistor of 1000 ohms and a reverse bias zener diode with a voltage of 12V abd current max of 10ma

how do i tell if its properly biased? answer is no but not sure how to go about it cause for next Q the resistor just changes to 1200 ohms and voltage of diode changes to 8V with a current max of 5ma but now is properly biased, how do you tell?

you need more than 12 volts to get the zener into breakdown. In this case, you need 12 volts plus a few volts across the 1k resistor.

next example, you have 10 volts and an 8 volt zener, so it is reverse biased. The current is 2 volts over 1.2k or 1.6 mA.
