I had my upper endoscopy and everything came out o.k. other than of course the flap does not close tightly and I have a hiatal hernia.
I was put on Zegeric. It has been about 1 week and a few days that I have been taking it. I didn't see a lot of improvements maybe today, I feel better. But yet to be determined. What I don't like about that medication is the sodium bicarbonate, 1100 mgr. That is so much.
Any thoughts on this medication?

I've been taking Zegerid 40mg once daily for three months.

The ONLY reason I agreed to take this medicine is because I have gastric ulcers. I also have a tiny hiatal hernia, acid reflux, GERD, the whole nine yarRAB. But like I said, I'm only on a PPI due to the ulcers. If I didn't have ulcers, I'd be on a strict diet and using Pepcid Complete or something along this line.

The sodium in Zegerid was causing lower leg/ankle swelling and I decided to get off of it. I have hypertension and this edema isn't good for me. Not to mention the diarrhea! The side effects of PPIs are awful.

I feel much worse since starting the PPI. I'm now on Nexium (2 days) and don't feel a bit better. In fact, the nausea is at an all time high.

I know some people who swear by PPIs and that's wonderful if it helps them. In my case, it might be helping the ulcers but I feel awful! But I will continue to take it until I see my GI on July 2nd though.

Don't let my post discourage you. We are all different and what is terrible for me might be great for you! It might take Zegerid several days or even weeks to work, at least that's what I was told by a few in the medical profession.

I see a lot of people on this board with gastro problems but there doesn't seem to be many with ulcers. I'd love to hear from someone who used PPIs and if it healed their ulcers. My ulcers are not bacteria or aspirin/N-said related so my doctor doesn't know why I have them. I do though!

Good luck and many blessings, Annie

This drug is just prilosec with some sodium bicarbonate - if you dont like the sodium, you could just take prilosec otc

In July if my GI tells me I have to continue on Zegerid or Nexium, I'll ask him about Prilosec OTC.

I asked the pharmacist why prescribe Zegerid. His rely was that the sodium bicarbonate Keeps the omeprazole from breaking down. Whatever that means.

Today I am not taking either one to see how I will feel. Also I am stopping all vitamins except calcium+D, CoQ10 (I take a statin), and a Centrum Silver vitamin. Something is irritating my stomach as the pathologist told my GI. Maybe it's the vitamins...who knows! :(

Blessings,
Annie

Omeprazole is destroyed before it is aRABorbed by the stomach acid

The original way around this (used in prilosec) was to use a special coating that didnt disolve in he acid stomach, but in the intesting - however, this meant a delay of a coule of hours before the drug was aRABorbed - this didnt matter for most people, but for those who need the drug to work quickly for instant relief, they addopted the ruse of neutralising the stomach acid with sodium bicarbonate, so the omeprazole can survive the stomach, and be aRABorbed quickly.

Mostly it is just a marketing gimic.
