So I liked the original anime and despite the unpopularity of GX, I have decided to give it a try. I just want to know a couple things before I start.

1. Does the show have the mystical element to it that the original did? (Ya know the Millennium Items, Shadow Duels, that kind of thing)

2. How is the voice-acting in the dub? I know people will cry up and down about the edits in the first anime but I still liked most of the VAs. Just wondering how they are in this show.
 
It follows a school theme, where there are three distinct talent levels broken into grades. You would think that would be awful, but it enRAB up working out pretty well.

The voice acting is about about equal to the original. The headmaster can be obnoxious, though.
 
Yeah, during the first season. The rest of the series makes up its own villainous force, so to speak.

Ugh, awful! Scottie Ray's Zane doesn't hit the same chorRAB that Takeshi Maeda's Ryo does and Matthew Charles' Jaden is way off from equaling KENN's great performance as Judai (especially during the midpoint of season 3).
 
Hm. Charles' real name is Lucas Gray....

lol He did Johnny Steps in the original Yu-Gi-Oh... You'd think they get someone a bit more prominent to voice the main protagonist. Oh well, I guess I shouldn't pass judgment until i hear some of it.
 
They have mystic powers, but they're mostly new things and don't reuse the old mechanics (there's a Shadow Duel in one of the first episodes when Titan uses a fake Millennium Puzzle, but that's it) Otherwise, they use new mystic elements.

Most people will probably say it's terrible on principal, but I thought they were fine and they all fit; Jaden sounRAB confident and laid back, though admittedly when acertain plot twist happens in the third storyline it leaves more to be desired from his acting. If you had no problem with the original dub's acting then GX should be no different.
 
I agree that KENN does a much better job in terms of providing serious/sadness in Judai's voice, especially during season three. Still, I think that Jaden's voice works really well for his enthusiasm and happiness. I don't think that Matthew Charles pulled off sad emotions that well. As for Scottie Ray, I actually like his voice for Zane. I think that it overall works, especially for his anger. I understand and respect where you're coming from though.



There are mystical elements in the series. They have a reference to the Millennnium items in episode five, but that's really the only time they have appeared. Otherwise, they have their own mystical elements, such as duel spirits. They do have Shadow Duels, but not too often if I remeraber correctly. The later seasons focus less on mystical objects and more on different evil forces.



I thought that the voice acting was generally fine. There were some voices that I didn't like, but those mostly came from characters I didn't particularly care for to begin with. Like Marinite mentioned, if you were fine with the voice acting for the original series, you'll probably be fine with the voice-acting for GX.
 
Some of the voice acting in the dub isn't bad. I liked Zane (Kaiser) and loved Sartorius's (Saiou) voice actress. A few of the character's even have a so bad it's good quality like Misawa and Chazz (Manjoume). Most of them suck though.
 
That's fine. I did say that I understand and respect where you're coming from. Besides, I wasn't implying that Zane's voice is better than Ryo's. I just prefer his English voice over his original voice, but that's just my personal taste on his voice.
 
So I'm only one-and-a-half episodes in. Obviously these are gonna be very sketchy first impressions but...
1. Zane and Alexis have the best VAs, followed by Jaden. But if the cameo by Yugi in episode 1 counts, he's the best. XD
2. I wonder if Jaden and Alexis will have a thing... Probably just fanshipping but so far they look cute together and she keeps sticking up for him.
3. The "feel" of the show is way different than Yu-Gi-Oh! But I guess there's a lot more to go. Even YGO took a while to find its stride.
4. I like Jaden's abundance of enthusiasm. It serves as a nice contrast to the timid Yugi or generally stoic Atem.
 
Yeah, I always get a kick out of Yugi sounding like Atem in episode one. I'll let you know now that Alexis voice does change in the middle of this season. I think that it's the same voice actress, but just a different pitch for the voice.



There is a pairing for them, but I don't think that it's just fan speculation.



Yeah, the first few episodes have a much different feel than DM did. I think it takes GX a bit longer to find its stride than DM did, but I still consider it an enjoyable series.



I like Jaden's energetic personality as well, or at least to a certain point. There are times throughout the series, mainly in season one, where I found his enthusiasm a bit too much and annoying, depending on the situation.
 
I only seen like 90 episodes so far and I can summarize this series in one word: Deux e-ma china. Judai has an unrealistic winning streak and before you bring out Yugi.. Yugi(Yami) is the King of games, an Ancient Spirit is much believable to have a strong winning streak.

The show seems to focus a lot on Judai and the rest of the characters suffer even if they have some focus episodes the balance is not as strong as Yugi/Joey had. The show always finRAB a way to stretch the plot so Judai can be the one to save the day even the most strongest duelists have to loose against the villains so Judai can come and steal the spotlight later on. This is why I found annoying that:

Alexis and Chazz Manjome gave in to the Society of light.
 
Honestly, I think the ending to the third storyline is a better conclusion for the series (bittersweet ending). The fourth one was just kind of weird and felt tacked on compared to the Yubel storyline.
 
I agree about Jaden/Judai having an unrealistic winning streak. Considering he has an Elemental Hero deck, having that many victories and only losing like three times in the course of the series.



I noticed that throughout the series as well. I don't think that GX did a great job on balancing the development for each characters like DM did. I also thought that it was strange that Jaden/Judai had so many more duels than the other characters. He was the new main character and it's understandable that he would get more focus and duels, but hardly any of the other characters had decent to satisfying focus and development during the course of the series. What made it strange to me was that every character in GX was a duelist, while the only duelists in among the main characters were Yugi, Atem, Joey and Kaiba.

I understood why Jaden/Judai always had to be the one to defeat the main villains since he was the main character. Still, it probably wouldn't been a problem if other characters had some nice focus.

As for the spoiler:

I can understand why Chazz/Manjome gave into the Society of Light since he wasn't so sure of his skills. As for Alexis/Asuka, I don't think that it was necessary for her to become a meraber of the Society. She didn't really receive much attention after becoming a meraber and the way she gave it didn't really work for me



I'm only up to episode 165, but it doesn't seem that bad to me. The only problem I have with the season thus far is that

Zane's deck is what cause his heart problems, instead of the underground duels. Even though I loved those episodes focusing on both him and Syrus, considering they're my favorite characters in this series, that didn't really make sense to me. Especially when it was confirmed back in season two that Zane wasn't under any influence during his duel with Atticus.

Granted, there could be more that I don't like about the season later on, but it doesn't seem that bad to me at the moment.

I thought that there was some confirmed information on this pairing. I mentioned before that I did not think that it was just fan speculations. I was mainly going with Alexis/Asuka's behavior after her Tag Team Duel with Jaden/Judai where it looked like she was going to tell him her feelings, but changed her mind at the last minute and cried a little when he was headed back to his dorm.

So I'm watching GX and there's an episode with a duel spirit of Jinzo.
Is there any explanation of what a duel monster spirit is? Is it the soul of the monster the card was based on? Is it some sort of ethereal psychic manifestation of the card itself?
 
They start popping up more later on, especially in the second arc and beyond. I believe they're more of the former than the later, though you could say they're the same thing.

While I agree Jaden is a spotlight hog and would like to have seen the side character do more main battle dueling..
Just how many of the Shadow Riders did Jaden beat? All but 2? I forget, more than he should have, though
I felt GX did a better job overall with the side characters, or at least had more interesting characters to me. I liked Chazz, Axel, Hassleberry, Syrus, and Jim a lot more than I did Duke, Tea, Tristan and others. They felt like they had more of a role in the story and/or more personality to me.

Yeah, he defeated five of the seven Shadow Riders. Or six if you want to count the duel with Kagemaru and the Sacred Beasts. I understood why he defeated Nightshroud, Camula and Amnael, but they really could have allowed for the other characters to win some duels. Chazz only defeated the Dark Scropins and Alexis defeated Titan. If it wasn't for the fact that Zane losing to Camuilla was in order to save Syrus's live, I wouldn't have been okay with Jaden beating her.



I agree that the side main characters in GX were more interesting and had better personalities than characters like Duke, Tea and Tristan in DM. They definitely stand out more compared to those kinRAB of characters in DM.I don't think that the writers gave them enough development/screentime over the course of the series.

The only characters who I think had a decent to satisfying amount of development in the series were Jaden, Syrus, Zane, Chazz and arguably Aster. Alexis and Bastion were really pushed to the sidelines for the majority of the series. While I liked some of the characters introduced in season three, especially Jim and Jessie was pretty cool too, I think that the writers could have done a better job with them as well.
 
I was disappointed how they dropped Bastion and kind of forgot about him (and even made a few jokes about it), since I really liked him, but it was nice to see him again in the third arc (even if he was more of a plot device than anything). I think my favorite part of the third arc was
Jim and Axel's little adventure to save Jaden from the Supreme King. It was nice to see them in the spotlight for a while. Along with Aster and Zane's little adventure. I was kind of disappointed Jaden did all the work in the dark world while the others just sat around. I wish Hassleberry and the other did some of the fighting, though I guess it was ultimately about Jaden and Yubel in the end.

Alexis was probably the least developed character on the show, next to Blair. Even Atticus had more development than her I think.
 
I agree. I liked Bastion and I thought that he was pretty different from the rest of the cast. I never did like how he disappeared for nearly thirty episodes and then left again during the Dark World arc. I also didn't like how they finally took him out of the series, even though it was already obvious that the writers weren't too found of Bastion.



Yeah, I liked seeing Jim and Axel's adventure to save Jaden from the Supreme King too. That part of the arc did make me like Jim even more. It's just too bad that he never spoke again after his lost to the Supreme King. Seeing Aster and Zane work together was really cool too. I would have liked to see the other characters having a couple of duels in the Dark World too. That would have been much better than just bringing them to supposedly die just so Jaden would become the Supreme King.

I agree that both Alexis and Blair were the least developed characters on the show. I don't think that there was even a good reason to bring Blair back, considering her first episode in season one, and she didn't really play a major role in season three or four anyway. Atticus did have more development than Blair, although it was weird how he would disappear and then suddenly reappear, such as with the Other Dimension arc and then the Dark World arc.
