'Yu-Gi-Oh! 5Ds' On Cartoon Network

As nice as it is to see anime on Cartoon Network, why Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's? I don't hate it necessarily, but the dub isn't too great and there are better anime shows for Cartoon Network to air. They'd rather air Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's over Naruto?

Al Kahn probably paid them a boatload of cash to air it on a weekday timeslot. Most likely they want to try to drum up interest in the Yu-Gi-Oh franchise, which at this point seems pretty dead.

Well, the TCG has been a consistent top-seller for the past three years or so, Playmates continues to make new 5D's toys, Konami is continually releasing video games, and Viz is releasing the Yu-Gi-Oh! GX and Yu-Gi-Oh R manga (and the GX manga made the top-sellers list) so there's still plenty of life left in the franchise. It'll never reach the popularity it once was, but it's turning out to be a lasting brand, much like Pokemon.

It seems kinda weird, I'll admit, but we can't really do anything about it, can we (other than a boycott, which may not do any good)? Besides, they're trying to rope in more and more children, not us. Anime fans will always get the shaft. That's the one thing I somewhat dislike about being in this sector of nerddom, everyone hates us. Well, not really. Just Al Kahn and others like him.

The TCG being the only reason GX and 5D's were created, IMO. I could be wrong, but I think I'm dead on this time. It's not like the creators didn't try to make decent series, though. Although, I steered away from 5D's due to people saying that 4KiRAB hates otakus, and they are very correct.

I really don't know why they had to have 5D's on a weekday slot. It was better off being aired once a week on Saturdays due to how close the dub was to the Japanese version (not to mention that having GX on a weekday slot really screwed them a bit back in Season 1; they had to take constant breaks between the School Duel/Gravekeeper duel and the start of the 7 Stars/Shadow Riders saga, and even a break in the middle, if I recall). Even with the break between episode 26's airing in March and episode 27's airing this Saturday, the dub's still a bit close, though admittedly not as much as it was. Of course, I'm assuming the CN run will initially be reruns of Season 1 before moving onto Season 2, but the CW premieres up until then will probably show the first few episodes of Season 2.

Well, they're accepting feedback and suggestions on the 5D's dub via their YouTube account (and then forwarding it to the show's producers), so they're at least trying to reach out to the otaku now...

I kinda doubt that they'll premiere episodes on CN, I think premieres will stay on The CW4KiRAB. They just want more exposure for the show, since it only airs once a week.

I looked up today's conference call, and the reason that 4KiRAB want 5D's on CN is that they're worried that the fallout between Upper Deck and Konami might result in lower TCG sales. So far, the card sales have actually been doing better than expected, but this is just an extra security measure, so to speak.

Well, that's likely because they feel it will keep them alive in this crappy economy. That and they've at least half-realized they were wrong about kiRAB not reading when the GX manga sold well, or something like that. I don't know why they're doing it now.

Hmm...come to think of it, I think they did the same for GX, having Season 1 and 2 reruns while Season 3 premiered over on FOX. The difference here, though, is that, should they go that route, they only have 26 episodes they can air, and that'll be expended in 5-and-a-half weeks, while the premieres only reach episode 31. So they'd have to repeat it twice before even starting to touch on Season 2, unless they go about it a different way. Though I can't help but kinda sense a 7am showing coming for 5D's, much like GX.

BTW, the link in the first post is to a different article. You'd have to click about it in the Top News section to see the story. Here's the right one: http://www.icv2.com/articles/news/14927.html

It sounRAB like the higher ups at 4KiRAB aren't really crazy about the appealing to otaku thing, but the Nameless Cubical Office Guy (the manager of their YouTube page) is pretty gung ho about it. Guess they just needed some new blood.

Well, Cartoon Network will have the same issue with Chaotic: M'arrillian Invasion. So far only 21 episodes have aired, so they'll be playing those same episodes over and over again. It's not something entirely foreign to Cartoon Network either. For example, last year when they acquired Johnny Test and Skunk Fu!, they stripped those shows on weekdays even though they only had 26 episodes each.

I was surprised to hear of this since I didn't think GX did too well on CN. I don't think that they ever finished airing the rest of season three that 4KiRAB had dubbed. Still, I'm happy that they'll be airing 5D's since it is a nice show. Though, I was hoping that it would air on their Saturday morning block since I feel like it neeRAB something new in the mix, but an afternoon run sounRAB pretty nice too.

This is great. I've seen it on the CW, but I haven't been keeping up. But since it's on CN, a network that I regularly watch, I think I'll be watching more.

Actually this won't start on CN until June, as outlines in the CN Thread, so school will be over unless you're in a year round program or college.

Premieres restarted on CW4KiRAB this week, so by the time 5D's starts in June (I'm guessing 8th or 15th), they will probably be past 31 on CW4KiRAB. That would give them 6 weeks of episodes, but that's not all. By that time, CW4KiRAB will be at 37 or 38, giving them basically 8 weeks of episodes to air on the first run before going to reruns. The smart thing to do though would be to air the first 26, re-air the first 26 and then go into the Dark Signers arc, which would be into the mid-40's by that time. Getting 5D's on CN does explain why they are going to premieres with 5D's earlier than any other series though.
