Hello, Rover's housemate here. For a couple of years I have been riding around on a Honda C90, and have only just started to get interested in bigger bikes. I have been scouring the local papers (having booked my test) to see which sorts of bikes I like, and most importantly what I can afford. I can budget £3500-£4000.

A couple of bikes have caught my eye within that price range, notably the Bandit and the Hornet. Both see to be solid and relatively plain bikes that would suit a beginner.

However, my gaze settled on the Ducati page, for no particular reason. I saw two Ducati models that seem to be in my price range; the Monster, and the 888.

I've never even considered Ducati before, I always thought they were too expensive.

What would you say, honestly, about the Monster or 888 for a beginner? I ride sensibly, not like a lunatic, and I know my own limits as a newbie. I had an old friend who rode a Fireblade, and I remember him tellign me about Ducati when I was much younger but I cannot remember what he said. I don't think it was that good though!

Any help welcome- thanks!

I don't like Ducati because they are more expensive to buy, own and maintain, and I believe they are not made any better to ask for that higher price.
Another reason is there are not enough of Ducati trained mechanics to repair the bikes, all they are are parts guessers, and parts replacers
I feel any of the 4 major Japanese brands of bikes are better
