Pick one character for each author (and say the book they're from) or from the authors you are familiar with.

Jane Austen
Charles Dickens
Emily Bronte
Charlotte Bronte
Henry James
Shakespeare
Elizabeth Gaskell
Oscar Wilde
James Joyce

I'm thinking of writing a play or story with characters from classic british (and irish) literature novels so they don't have to be all the 'good' characters.

If you have any characters from other authors/books do share them as well.

Thanks.

Choosing the characters in an attempt to make a story hang together upon them.

Austen--Catherine Morland (Northanger Abbey): easy to involve her in a story since she's so INTO everything.

Charles Dickens--Sydney Carton (A Tale of Two Cities): Every story needs someone doomed but heroic.

Emily Bronte--Agreed, Heathcliff. Enough said.

Charlotte Bronte--Lucy Snow (Villette), with a secret identity and/or evil twin.

Henry James--Daisy Miller (eponymous): American abroad, BFF with Catherine Morland

Shakespeare--Richard III (eponymous): One of Shakespeare's most interesting characters. Can be the twisted, Gollum-like henchman.

Elizabeth Gaskell--Frederick Hale (North and South): Runaway brothers make for good McGuffins or plot starters.

Oscar Wilde--Wooldridge (the executed man in The Ballad of Reading Gaol): Good for a plot point.

James Joyce--Stephen Dedalus (A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man): Just left Ireland for England, can work well as a narrator for the rest.
