I am 28 years old, and I have a fear of public speaking. Someone suggested beta blockers to me, but my resting heart rate now is around 50-55. (I run and exercise a good deal) Is my resting, natural heart rate too low for a beta blocker?

I don't think a doctor would prescribe this medication for you since your heart rate is that "low" or "normal" due to your amount of exercise. It possibly could cause hypotension and cause you to pass out and be very weak. I have been on those meRAB and they make you feel SO TIRED. I would ask your doctor about a short acting Benzo like Xanax. It will be out of your system quicker than a Beta Blocker which might be good for your situational use. I also find they don't cause a problem with sticking to exercise routine.

As side thought....at one point I used to exercise very excessively and was in "great shape" but come to find out...it really screwed up my hormones/endocrine system....VERY BAD. I always had anxiety and thought working out would help but it made it much worse (again I was doing to much though). Just a thought. And I am not saying it's the case with you but it was a thought. You could always get a hormone panel done to see if there is a hormonal issue going on. But it might be the "fight or flight" response kicking in due to the rush of adrenaline you get before public speaking from fear and not a whole abnormal hormone problem. Sorry if I babbled on!:)
