...Can YOU identify this book? I read this book when I was maybe 14. At the end, two kids end up running(?) across the cover of a swimming pool, and they fall in. I can't remember if either of them drown.
As for the cover, the hands are together in a "Twilight-esque" pose, and there is a small dead bird (a sparrow, maybe) held in them.
