This is freaking long. But I'm still upset about it and it took over an hour to resolve, so please bear with me.

Before I was going to go to bed (at 3 am) I decided to check my e-mail. I see an e-mail from my bank saying that I was charged an overdraft fee. So of course, I book it over to my bank's site and check my account. I shouldn't have an overdraft because aside from the occational fast food outing, I don't go anywhere or spend any money from my checking because being jobless, I know I can't replace it.

Sure enough, there is a $35 overdraft fee because Dish Network charged me $72.42. Of course, I get upset and call Dish Network and go through the automated system to talk to someone in billing.

I talk to Richard. Richard informs me that he cannot tell me anything about the account because I am not my father and I am not listed on the account. I get even more upset and demand to speak with his supervisor.

After waiting on hold for about 5 minutes, the supervisor comes on the line. He tells me that he can't do anything because I'm not on the account. Can I put the account holder on the line? I tell him, "No. It's 3 am. He works two jobs. I am not waking him up because you won't work with me. It's my card and it never should have been on the account in the first place." He tells me to have my dad call back tomorrow. Well, I know that won't happen. (Since it's hunting season, he'll be in the woods from dawn til dusk with a brief break for lunch.)

At this point, I kind of snap. I tell him, "You know what, I'm going to wake him up. If you won't deal with me, you can deal with him." Yeah, I was being snotty, but it took every fiber of my being not to start cussing him out for stonewalling me. I understand their policy and I understand that it's to protect their customers. However, when I have an overdraft fee, I don't give a fuck about policies.

So, now I wake my dad up. He refuses to talk to the guy. I tell him that he has to (I'm on the brink of tears now) because he has to put me on the account so I can get this figured out. Dad takes the phone and says, "Put her on the account already."

So, now I'm talking to the supervisor again. Here are the charges to my account:

7/7/09- $72.42
8/6/09- $0.24
9/8/09- $0.24
10/7/09- $0.24
11/6/09- $72.42

So, all tolled, they charged me $145.56. The supervisor asks me why I didn't notice these charges earlier and report them. I told him that I don't use that account because I don't have a job and so I have no way to put money into the account. He starts to tell me that he'll refund the charges but not the overdraft. I get upset again and tell him as much. He tries to cut me off and I say, "No. I am talking." He tells me, "I am hanging up and you will not be refunded." And he hangs up.

WTF?! How can you not refund me money that you never should have charged me in the first place?!

So I call back. At this point, my dad grabs the phone and talks to the guy. (Probably a good idea since I am now crying.) He gets it figured out. They will refund me one payment of $72.42. (Because when they charged me that amount in June, my mom didn't send in a check because she didn't realize she didn't recieve a bill.)

So, how did this all get so fucked up? In June, I called and ordered a new clicker for my Dad for Father's day. I made it clear that my card number was not to be added to the account and that it was only supposed to be used for the clicker. (On my bank statement, it says "One time only charge".) Somehow, my debit card was added to the account as the primary direct pay account. So, my mom was sending in checks and they were charging me each month. (The months I was charged $0.24 were months that I didn't have enough in my account (apparently) to cover the bill, but Mom's check came. So I was only charged 24 cents.)

Dad was able to get 90 days of free movie channels since they couldn't refund the overdraft fee. But, now I have to go to the bank later today to see if they can't reverse the overdraft since it was a company that charged me wrongly and the account will be refunded within 5 business days.

The guy Dad talked to appologized for his supervisor (he read the conversation back to my dad) several times. But a lot of fucking good a sorry does me. I appreciate it, but it would have meant more from the fucker of a supervisor.

I fucking HATE Dish Network.

Short version:
In June, I got my dad a clicker from dish network. They added my debit card number to the account for auto pay when they were not authorized to. Since June, they have been trying to charge me for the bill, but were only successful twice for a total of $145.56. An all out war errupted between Dish Network and myself because of the charges and a subsequent overdraft charge and my Dad had to call them back to have it refunded. We now have Starz and some other movie channels for 90 days. They will not refund my overdraft fee. I have to go to the bank and beg them to remove the fee. I will only be refunded $72.42 from Dish Network (but my parents have said that they will cover the rest.)

I fucking HATE Dish Network.

Should be fine. I had a similar mishap earlier this year, and my bank just forgave the fees then and there since I've had a clean history with them otherwise.

As long as you are not a chronic over draft offender they will give you the money back. As to talk to the branch manager and tell them what happened. You'll be fine :)

Signed,
A reformed chronic overdrafter.

Thanks. I'm not a chronic overdrafter. I think I've overdrafted on this account once before a couple of years ago. I'm usually really careful because when I was young, I overdrew my account by 25 or 50 cents. So... I should be alright there.

My sister told me the same thing Tostig. I'll talk to them, however, my dad had them remove me from the account. It would be good to have that extra security. :)

I've worked with cable customer service, and the "I can't give you any information on the account because you're not listed as an authorized user" is something I said a lot as well. Many cable companies have a policy that states that regardless of whether you live in the house or it's your credit card paying the bill, if it is not noted somewhere on the account that you are authorized to get information or make changes, the person on the line can't do anything for you. It sucks, and we all hated that policy, but it's not the person on the phone's fault that their company makes stupid rules.

That's actually a good point Bath. I did say several times that "you, the company, charged me and you, the company, should fix it." I don't think it's right to get pissy and yell at the people working. I find things go much more smoothly if you make it clear that you are mad at the company and not the individual.

I give my dad props for thinking to ask for the movie channels. We get them free for 3 months. But then, we have to call and cancel them because if we don't, they won't simply dissapear. We will start being charged for them.

Yeah I always appreciated when people made sure to point out that they weren't mad at me, but the stupid company that paid me to make people mad.

Ok, brain fart on my part. I can't go to the bank today because it's a bank holiday. So, tomorrow I shall finish this nasty business. Hopefully the bank will have better customer service. You can't hang up on someone when they're talking to you in person.

All companies are bastards, seriously, I haven't met one yet that wasn't.

Oh and Mags, wow, such language! I've never seen you so angry. Its pretty darn sexy.

At least it wasn't too big of an amount, but make sure that card is deleted. We have dish, and due to some family complications my grandma had to change her card number, and they keep using the old card and then calling us up and yelling about it. They are dumb.

so um.. just get your debit card canceled and get a new one... thusly cutting off dish network... when they complain tell them they already go thier payment in the form of the 145 illegally obtained bux and to go fuck themselves with it....

wtf are you doing with dish network anyway? satalite sucks...

Getting a new debit card won't do me any good until there is money in my account because my bank freezes all activity when you have outstanding fees. I'll just go talk to them in the morning. I'm sure it'll be fine.

And we have satalite because it is that or nothing. We don't have cable as an option where I live.

Haha. No, but saying suck my non-existant balls didn't sound as angry.

So, I went to the bank today. They weren't going to reverse the charges, but the banker talked to her manager and they decided to reverse them. The refund from Dish still hasn't gone through, so I can't spend any money until I get that or I'll overdraw my account again.

Well, at least now I don't have to worry about them sending creditors after me.
