Hi Spineys, have any of you done yoga or been given the green light to do yoga after a microdisectomy? I am interested in starting yoga, but have had (2) of these surgeries in the past 2 1/2 years and am concerned about re-herniating or aggravating the spine.

Thanks for your replys!

It would be helpful if you could go to a teacher who understanRAB spinal issues. In some cases the bending and twisting could be harmful.

I had a microdiscectomy in October and I was cleared to do a modified yoga program via DVD. It is called Viniyoga and it is targeted for people with back pain. They have a DVD for upper back and lower back. I just got them in the mail and I never did yoga before my injury so I won't really be able to rate them for you. My PT said yoga classes would be fine but there are certain positions I would have to modify or sit out on. A good instructor should be able to help.

There is a very helpful book entitled "Cure Back Pain with Yoga" by Loren Fishman, MD. If you enjoy doing yoga without taking a class, this might be just what you're looking for.

Hi David ~

nice to see you on the board. How are you coming along??

I had my PLIF 6 weeks ago. So far, mostly so good!

Often times yoga studios will have a "yoga for back pain" class, or series of classes. It can be pretty pricey (the place near my house charges $160 for a 10-class session), but having an instructor there to correct your posture for you is pretty valuable. I haven't taken it, though I did do some other yoga classes before my back problems became bad.

good Luck,
David

Hi marlosmom!

I'm doing very well! I started PT last week... just stretching, core exercises, aerobic exercise on the exercise bike, and walking walking walking! I even got the OK to start doing push-ups (NO sit-ups though, which is fine - I HATE sit-ups ;))!

I even get to start work again in a week or so!

So I can't complain. I'm very happy with the way things have turned out so far.

Good to be back!
David

Hi David,

That's great news. How long ago was your surgery? I'm having a few set-backs but I'm hoping it's just nerves acting up and that it will go away soon. I called the doctor's office today and spoke with his nurse. I was describing what was wrong, said pain in the front of my thigh and that it hurt so bad that sometimes I couldn't walk. She listened patiently and then responded "Do you need to walk?"
