Now I can understand yellow lines being on one side of a road where it would block a road from incoming traffic and sometimes it is necessary on both sides of a road and also they are a good thing when it comes to helping to keep entrances clear etc BUT

what is the point of having yellow lines willy nilly on our roads and in our towns for NO other good reason that to line the purses of the town councils ! Most of us pay our road tax, car tax, car insurance and god only knows what else we pay so why can we not park anywhere !

Our towns and local shops are losing customers daily because of this.

Just let us park ( as long as it is safe and sensible) where we want !!

It is surely a civil and human right ! Next they will be telling us not to walk until we have paid a walking fee !
You two who have replied first, I don't think I am selfish at just wanting to park my car ! If you read my question properly you will see I am talking about the places where there are yellow lines for no apparent reason ! I don't want tp park my car where it will cause any problems but I think there are way too many yellow lines in and around town centres just to give money to the councils etc. Are you both traffic wardens or something :) ?
And as for laziness and selfisness, why should we have to pay to park in a town or city centre car park when there are roads to park on that we should be allowed to park on ! Too many yellow lines and too many people charging for parking in my opinion. I am not lazy or selfish.

Derke ,

For the second time, I am not selfish and for your kind information I am not part of this "me" generation that you speak of.Thank you very much. I am just against the excessive and willy nilly use of yellow lines on our streets where ( and only where) there is no need for them ! I don't want to see roads blocked with cars but some roads would not be blocked without yellow lines and I have nothing against yellow lines where this would happen as a consequence. There are lots of roads in and around towns that have yellow lines for no reason just to bring money into the council. Yes there are roads that need to be yellow to avoid blocking traffic but others that don't. That's all I am saying. You may not be a traffic warden but you are beginning to sound like one or a counciller ! I have been to so many towns where you have to drive around for ages to find somewhere to park and have to pay excessive parking fees because all the roads have yellow lines.

And for heavens sake why should we have to pay to park our cars in towns ? We are not all made of money and that is one of the reasons that people are choosing to shop at out of town supermarkets instead. Having yellow lines everywhere and expensive car parking just encourages shoppers to go elsewhere.

Yellow lines have nothing to do with any human rights, you are confusing them with the desire to do what you like and want. Just because you cannot see a reason for them doesn't mean there isn't one.
You do not have any right to park where you please, that is just selfishness.

It is a tax, but one on laziness and selfishness.
Just because you don't know the reason for the yellow lines it doesn't mean there isn't one.
My local shops have a car park. But it involves walking 50 yards to the shops. So many people don't use it. That is because they are lazy and selfish and would rather park on the yellow lines blocking the traffic. Sometimes they get a ticket. Then complain about the council using the fines purely to raise revenue.
We all have to obey the same rules. But some chose not to for their own selfish reasons and consequently pay the price for their actions. I personally welcome the lazy and selfish for subsidising my council tax.

I see.
Towns were built before cars became common. Unimpeded access to the roads would result in major congestion problems. But the council need to maintain access for deliveries and people - these are what keep the commercial/retail businesses alive. So they don't want you to drive in. The council want you to take the bus as it makes use of the roads more efficient. But they don't pave the town centres completely and build over the car parks. Instead, they charge a premium to those who want to use them.
They are for those who are made of money - so it is not for you. It is not a right it - is a luxury. Life's unfair, sorry.
