Banks and kept their money safely hidden in a pot buried in their Garden under a big stone and while tthis is not always a great idea it worked for them they had a fairly decent house sparce and they were very careful but I beleave they were better of. They did not pay interest fees. The money was there if they needed it any time of day or night. The pot was opened every 3 months to put money in it was very rarely used only once a year for their 1 weeks holiday in Blackpool. I can tell you that jar was never empty and my grandfather used to say it is for a rainy day. Well it rained alot but that pot was never touched sometimes I think about this I never once saw them in debt and my grandfather had a horse & cart even when I was a child from which he sold vegatables grown on his own allotment and a patch also in the garden. What do you think about this simple times happy times.
