Just bought a 1998 yfz 600r carburated. On the way home after i bought it i felt the clutch slip when i really hammered on it. on further inspection I smelled gas in the oil. so I plan on servicing the carbs which is no big deal. But what I want to know is it really that hard to replace a clutch? Dont I just pull of the clutch cover and pull out the friction and steel discs? Do I need a special tool to hold the clutch in place? I am very mechanically inclined but I just want to know what I am getting into. Should I replace anything else when I replace the clutch?
 
First, check gas petcock for by-pass than just change the oil and filter.
Run it easy for a few easy miles, change oil again.
Test it out.
Replacing the clutch plates doesn't require any special tools only some basic knowledge of MC maintenance and a bit of skill.
Your best bet is to have a service manual!
