yamaha raptor question about choke?

ok i know your suppose to first start the bike up with the choke on but i just wanted to know if its pointing left with the choke Symbol is left choke on or off and do i turn it off once i start the bike up and i also wanted to know what the choke dose and can it hurt the bike if not on while starting
