Yamaha Portasound PSS 680 synth and Midi Problem?

Hi

I hope someone can help me :)

I was given a PSS 680 (old keyboard from the early 90's) a couple of weeks ago. AIt quite a funky FM keyboard, some quite nice sounds!

I am wanting to use it to work as a controller to play Music using my laptop as the sound generator (GS Midi I think it is) .... you probably just worked out that I am not an expert here!

Anyway, I boughth a USB/Midi cable and connected it correctly to the laptop and keyboard. I am using Vista OS and Anvil Studio software. I can play music through thekeyboard using the laptop to send data to the keyboard. However, when i try and do it the othwe way around .. the laptop will play a few notes, with delay and then start to miss notes, also it is not playing more than one note at a time through the laptop and is sustaining notes randomly.

What am I doing wrong, please help I am pulling out what little hair I have left :))

PSS-680 issues with MIDI

I know that I am answering this 2 years after you asked...but I'm doing it for the sake of the NEXT person having this problem that searches and finds this.

For some reason, the PSS-680, when hooked up to a USB/MIDI cable, can only work if you plug in one cable at a time. So when you want to record MIDI, you plug in the OUT cord, and when you want to play back to the synth, you have to switch to the IN cord. This will stop the issue you describe below.
