Caught this on Sky cinema the other day.

Very rude, but very good flick.

Imagine a Mexican version of Road Trip - but with a bit more up top and you're pretty much there.

Without giving anything away, it boasts quite an, er, eye-opening climax too.

Final scene is sad though. I guess it really is the end of summer...
 
The scary thing is this is the same guy (Alfonso Cuaron) who directed Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Just goes to show that talented directors such as Alfonso can put their hand to anything and make it good.
 
i saw this a while back, really enjoyed it and thought the two actors would definately go further.One of them (Gael Garcia Bernal) also starred in the fantastic 'Amores Perros' and is now playing a young Che Guevara in 'the Motorcycle Diaries'.If you enjoyed Y Tu then go get amores perros !!!!! now! !!!!!
 
I *thought* I recognised the guy playing Che!!

Thanks for the tip off. Haven't seen Amores Perros, but will defo keep an eye out for it.

Y Tu Mama was a big hit in Mexico, so I'm not surprised all involved have gone on to bigger things.
 
i like this flick i was told by a friend that i should watch it . Well it was a bit my full on than i thought its was going to be but i liked it all the same
 
a few days ago i had never heard of this film.....then after reading this thread i was on IMDB and for some reason i was looking at Natalie Imbruglia's profile (i was looking at Jonny English), and i noticed that she has a track on the soundtrack to this film.
I will have a look out on the EPG to see if i can catch it on Sky.

if anyone has an idea on when it is on again, please post...as i am rather lazy :o
 
Well it was showing on Sky Cinema. But checking the skymovies website, it isn't on for the next couple of weeks anyway. Looks like you might have missed the boat. I think Sky Cinema tend to repeat movies for a few weeks and then they don't show them again - unlike the other nine channels where films seem to get repeated again and again for about three months!
 
Well I watched this film last night on Channel 4 and thought it was absolutely fantastic - did a search before starting a thread and found this.

I've never ever watched a foreign film before and couldn't believe how amazing it was.

I think I found it so brilliant because it was so honest and real and I connected with each of the characters very easily.

I don't know what it was, but I literally had goosebumps when I watched the jukebox scene and then when I viewed the final scene, I didn't know what do to with myself.

Do not read if you haven't already seen the film...
There was a hint in the middle of the film about death, but I dismissed it quickly. However, when the audience finRAB out Luisa had died of cancer a month after their trip, I almost cried. It was as if the character had completely let go on the trip and was nothing like the woman in her first scene. Almost like the cancer had been a good thing and she'd finally been able to be free.

Secondly, I'm glad that you've given foreign film a chance - there's soooo much great stuff out there at the moment esp. the recent spate of award-winning German & Mexican cinema.

It's a fantastic film, and I too found it very easy to connect with the characters; there are plenty of emotionally raw movies out there, but the impetuous, youthful zest of Gael Garcia Bernal and Diego Luna gave the whole film a refreshing buoyancy.

Any thoughts about what you might chance next in the world of foreign language film?
 
I'm glad you enjoyed it. :) This is one of the many Gael Garcia Bernal movies in my DVD collection, but definitely one of the best. If you liked this, you might be interested in some of his other work: The Motorcycles Diaries, Amores Perros, Bad Education, The Science of Sleep, to name a few. He's a very interesting actor with an impressive body of work to his name.

Also, I don't know who knows this on here but Gael and his YTMT co-star Diego Luna have been best frienRAB since they were toddlers and they have made another film together. It's about football and called Rudo y Cursi (Robust and Pretentious). It's directed by Carlos Cuaron who wrote Y Tu Mama. So keep an eye out for that...
 
I've been watching quite a few of the films starring Gael Garcia Bernal, I think he's a brilliant actor and the films i've enjoyed throughout, they sure aren't scared of contreversy:eek:
 
Caught "The King" a few months back and it was very good. He has an almost flawless American accent in it aswell. Without giving away too much, it has an interesting ending.
 
He's fantastic at accents. His Spanish accent in Bad Education was spot on, as well as his Argentinean accent in The Motorcycle Diaries.

The King was good, but not one of my favourites from him.

I was lucky enough to see this at our local cinema, when it came out. Had no idea about the ending so was really shocked.

Out of those films The Motorcycle Diaries is the most similar, so you'll undoubtedly enjoy that too.

Amores Perros is my favourite out of those. It's a very powerful & moving film.
 
A friend recommended this to me - I was expecting a Spanish language version of American Pie because she only told me about the sex scenes! But it was actually a lot deeper than I thought it would be, and quite sad in bits. Definitely worth seeing.
