XBOX 360 will not play my DVDs while my flash drive is inserted?

for some reason when I have my USB flash drive inserted and try to play DVDs I get an error message saying that I have removed a crucial(might say required) storage device and that the console will restart.However if I remove it plays DVDs just fine! Really it's not much of an inconvenience since I am still able to use the drive as my primary storage device and play all of my games just fine but I was just curious why it would do that.
