Xbox 360 external hard drive to install games?

I was wondering if I can use my 250 gb external hard drive to install (copy) game from my game cd to the hard drive because I heard that it is an advantage (loads game faster and it doesn't need the cd to run the game). I think I heard somewhere that I need the original copy of cd to verify I own the game. Yes I do have my own game but I would like to copy the game to an external hard drive and run it there. The reason is because my xbox 360 hard drive has only 4 gb left =(
