Xbox 360 Arcade and Hard Drives?

I recently bought a used Xbox and came to find out it only has about 256MB of memory in it. So i figure this means its an Xbox Arcade. My question is, if i were to buy additional memory can i buy an Xbox Hard Drive and connect it to the console. I see pics of where the HD goes and it doesn't seem to be a place for it on my xbox. (on the side of the console) Am I right?

Does the arcade only take memory cards?
