X10 only gets GPRS

Can anyone help please?
My wife has a SE X10 but the best it gets is GPRS. All the settings are correct for O2 (mobileweb, also tried on wap), it's set to GSM only otherwise the GSM signal gets dropped every few minutes but with WDCMA (?) it still only gets GPRS.
I've tried the SIM card in my Desire and it gets HSDPA and my SIM card in the X10 and only gets GPRS so it's not the SIM card or where the phone is as it's next to my Desire which is also on O2.
She's been out and about in Leeds (full HSDPA coverage) and it's still only on GPRS signal

Any help appreciated

The Xperia X10 does support the necessary bands required to get HSDPA in the UK. If it's connecting to mobile data at all (not WiFi) then your APN settings must be correct.

You certainly do not want to be using W-CDMA, as no network in the UK uses this system. That will force the phone to use GPRS only. We use GSM with HSDPA for our 3G networks. So take it off W-CDMA mode if it's still on that.

I suspect the problem is simply the icon. On Android 1.6, which the X10 uses, it does not differentiate between any of the 3G network types. It just displays either G (which is GPRS on 2G) or 3G (which is for all 3G and HSDPA networks). So if you're connected to 3G or HSDPA you will just see a 3G icon on the X10.

On the HTC Desire, in the UK, you would see either a 3G symbol or an H symbol (indicating HSDPA), depending on what type of 3G network you're connected to.

If you're seeing a G symbol on the X10, yet a 3G or H symbol on the Desire with the same SIM on the same location, then perhaps something else is up.

I'd recommend downloading Speed Test from the market: http://www.androlib.com/android.application.org-zwanoo-android-speedtest-zBiq.aspx

If you then run the speed test on the X10 while in an area you believe it should have HSDPA access and see what the results are... First though, go into the Settings tab on this app and make sure "Display speeds in" is set to "kbps", then go to the Speed Test tab and hit the test button. If you get anything above 115 kbps for your download speed on the X10 then you're using the network correctly, as that is the maximum speed of GPRS in the UK. In fact, anything above 40-80 kbps would probably mean the X10 is connecting correctly to 3G, as that's what most people can expect in a real environment in the UK on GPRS. If the X10 gets a result below 80, then it's probably not connecting to 3G correctly.
