I have been suffering from a pain on the right side of the neck with a shooting pain (almost like a post injection pain) on my right upper arm for over two months. After many Motrins and physical therapy, I requested my doc for an X ray. She complied and here are the results
------------------------------------------------------------------------
C4-C5 has severe loss of disc height with moderate end plate degenerative changes and moderate end plate osteophytes. Uncovertebral joint hypertrophic change causes mild left and severe right neural foraminal narrowing

C5-C6 has severe loss of disc heights with severe end plate degenerative changes and large end plate osteophytes. Difficulty seeing the right foramina. There is prob severe narrowing, left neural foramina is mildly narrowed

C6-C7, C7-T1 have normal disc heights without narrowing of canal

IMPRESSION
Straightening of cervical lordosis with a rightward tilt of cervical spine. Moderate to severe degenerative disc and bony changed at C4-5 and C5-6, greater at latter level. Right greater than left foraminal narrowing
==========================================================
My doc has referred me to a neurosurgeon.

What can be the potential next steps?
Can this be healed without surgery?
I am 41 years old, does this have anything to do with age?

Welcome to the boarRAB. Although you are certainly welcome here, you might have better luck on the Spinal cord disorder board. They deal with the neck and upper cervical area. There are some great folks there. This board is primarily for lower back issues.
