Does anyone know the name of the German machine gun that was used in WWII that is still used today?

mg42 was the one the Germans used during WWII.

it's still being used today (slightly modified) in the German army, under the new designation mg3. the mg3 fires 7.62mm NATO bullets in place of the old 7.92mm bullets used during the WWII. the mg3 also has a lower rate of fire than the mg42.

You could be referring to the MG42 which had such a high rate of fire that it made a noise that sounded like a high pitch ripping sound, the only real thing wrong with it (other than the fact the 'bad guys' had it and we didn't.) was that it was made with high tolerances that it was hard to mass produce unlike the Brownings we used at the time.
I believe that no one uses them today, you can contact the History Channel's home page and find programs about German machine guns, some are quite informitive regarding them and the different ones delevoped by Germany during WW II. The Military Channel also has some programs regarding WW II weapons.

...MG42 was the standard german army machine gun used during WWII. the NATO M60 machine gun uses features of the MG42 belt feed mechanism and the operating mechanism of the FG42.
