WTF is up...

I was one of those guys last week. I was looking at purchasing a 2002 750 Sport and wanted to ask if the people on this forum knew of any inherent problems to check for, or if the model had any sort of reputation as a money-pit.
I bought the bike because I have always wanted a Ducati, I trust the dealership, and my wife's new Ninja convinced me to ride something other than cruisers. I was glad all of the forums were here, and didn't mean any offense. However, I got the impression that most of the members were more than happy to help and offer qualified opinions.

weellllll, does my bum look big in this, and, what color highlights should i get.........are.. frequently asked questions (maybe not on a motorcycle forum)
22slow and I where just drawing focus to, or illuminating the topic of conversation, being, questions that are asked continuosly...and can never really be fully answered by someone else

Just my .02 here...I'm new to this forum, but not new to Ducs...I've owned I4's since '96 & been a member of a dozen forums & from my experience, sometimes new riders just need experienced riders (like us) to tell them a 1098 is a bad choice for a first bike.

Is it annoying & frustrating? IMO, not really...I only say this because if we can keep just 1 18 year old off a 1098 as a 1st bike & help prevent him/her from killing themselves, then we, the veterans, have done a good deed.

I know, I know, I'm being the optimist this morning, but hey, I like to help when I can. And just like one or more of the posters above said, nobody's twisting your arm to respond to these threads. As far as the reason internet forums exist...I like to think it's so we can help each other make educated (& wise) decisions (& this would include keeping a new rider off a 1098). Again, just .02.

That my friend is valid due diligence. Asking if a ducati is the right bike for you is not. Or asking if a ducati is the next step up from an 87 250cc.

Now throwing in an age is just ignorant. I'm a young Ducati rider, now given that this wasn't my first bike, age has nothing to do with riding talent. If you disagree and think that a 40 year old has more riding knowledge, tell that to motogp riders.

There are so many factors that cant be account for with age, maturity and experience. I beleive a mature 18yr old with a liter bike (while he DOESNT need it) woudl be fine with it. But at the same time I had a buddy get into bikes b/c of me, he bought a 99 zx6 I beleive? I dunno, but it was an old Kawa 600 that was a TANK of a bike. He rode it for a monthor , went and watched me do a trackday and said he was selling it to get a GSXR1000. I told him he shouldnt, as did all the guys at the trackday.

I told him he should get a 2006+ GSXR600, since that bike is leaps and bounds better than his old carb heavy tank 600 and he would notice the power different and weight difference immediately. So he wouldnt listen but i finally got him to decide on getting a 750 instead of a 1000. Now I worked with this guy and I know he has a tendancy to have to be the bad ass, and have the best stuff and always has a story better than yours (one of those guys)

He tells me he's going to buy his bike one day and I said dont get a 1000, my boss which is a harley rider says "dont be a b!tch get a 1000" I reminded him of all the 1000's he watched me pass on the track in the straights b/c I've ridden 600's for 8 years and I still havent tapped into all the power my R6 has. He shrugged me off. He came into work the next day on a brand new GSXR1000. I rolled my eyes and didnt pay attentino to him, also he wanted a Gixxer b/c everyone else rides them.

No more than a week later he's pulling out of the dealership with our other friend, that listened to me and bought a gsxr600. He turns out of the dealer, spins his back tire and highsides his bike. Luckly unhurt.

He fixes the damage, him and our friend ride home to Texas for holiday, he wrecks again trying to pop wheelies and flipped the bike over.

At this point our friend said Im not riding with you anymore with that bike b/c evidently he's wreckless everywhere they ride. He fixes his bike again, wasnt a month later he goes home again and showing off for his friends pops another wheelies and flips it again, this time really hurting himself. The bike is fixed now, he's still hurt, but how many times it it gonna take?

Our friend has been riding for over 6 months now, I rode with him a couple times and he's very cautious and a good rider. He wants to learn without an ego. He wanted a new bike and he wanted a ZX10R b/c he liked the way they looked, not the power or status, but he honesly just wanted teh look of the bike. So he bought it and has been perfectly fine on it, he respects the bike and the power however which is a big factor.

IMHO age has nothign to do wiht it, its personaliy and maturity. I've had a 30+yr old on a honda 929 tell me there is no way i could beat him on a track (he's never been on a track) simple b/c he has a bigger bike. That ignorance is what gets people killed.

we sold a 1098s to a guy who was 17 at the time (as a race bike), no license yet, the guy rode in the aus superbike comp and got a second (to mr mcmartin) in his class, in his first year out in the big comp with the experienced riders........kuddos to the boy, he can ride the arse off the thing (he also had his come-upance on casey stoner's hand me down bikes all thru his earlier competition years)..
but the kid doesnt even have a license yet....

my ol boy has been in the ducati business for 25years plus, and riding the whole time, he doesnt want a 1098 cuz he knows he will be on the back wheel most of the time....he knows himself...and what he would do...(loves the 1098 to death btw) (and also refuses sales to some peeps based on his concern for their choice/experience)

thing is on here(the forum), its so hard to gauge people and their backgrounds, personality traits, needs, idiosyncracies, ability, experience, motivation........the written word doesnt supply us with all of this background information needed to be able to fully answer some of the questions........and the questions do get a little trying at times.......
but we all try to give our best...and thats the main thing...
