I'm in the midst of starting my first full-length novel, set in Renaissance Italy. I plan on adding a lot of fictional detail, and as such, my main character is of course fictional in every way. However, I do plan on having him/her interact and co-exist with real, important figures of the time. He/she will also be aware and perhaps participate in the many noteworthy events that occur during this time period.
I myself am Italian and secretly, I'm going in this direction because it allows me to explore and broaden what little knowledge I have, about my own culture. The question I have is, as of the moment, the internet seems to be my only source in tracking down surviving information on Renaissance Italy. I need my novel to be an accurate portrayal of the time, otherwise a history buff will chew me up and spit me out.
So who I can turn to, or question, or gain guidance from about this period in history? The internet is giving me basic details, but not enough to flesh anything out. I really dont want to be tripping up on the infamous 'Howler' or any anachronisms.
Any information is greatly appreciated. Thanks guys!
