writing fiction military stuff...?

well i'm writing a book and at one point in my characters life he was in the military.

having never been in the military myself any tips on how to make what i write sound more legitamate?

the idea is that he was in north korea (considering it seems like we about to go to war with them i decided to make up a hypothetical war between USA and North Korea) and he was asleep when they were attacked by something. i have no idea whether to set it up as a military base or a makeshift camp of some sort. also i want his unit (if thats the proper term. the squad is better i guess) to be on the front lines. meaning they stopped at this "camp" for a break. and the next day were going to move on.

if you have a link to a website i'd love it or if you've written something along the lines of this then i'd love your help. its present day times too so its not the future or anything. its purely hypothetical too.
 
I would assume he is enlisted? Was he asleep on watch? Was he off-duty? Little details matter. As an enlisted member, I'd say this:

I'm on the lines and asleep. We are attacked. The first thing my body does in a situation is what it's trained to do. If I know what my station is and how to react, then my body does it before I can think. However, once my mind comes into play, it's training and instinct. Am I scared? Am I angry? "Flight or Fight" is a common term for military reaction. Do you take action or freeze?

I think an inner termoil with your character would be interesting. His initial reaction may be to jump up and grab a gun. But what if he can't pull the trigger? Or...what if he freezes? But once someone sprays their brains on him, he goes into a blackout frenzy? It depends on the character and his\her rank and their moral standing and background.
 
You're best bet is get down to some serious research, look up the Korean war.

Also you could get in contact with some soldiers via the Military section on Y!A..........just a thought.
