I have four cats, and I've had more than my share of scrapes and scratches. Yesterday, we let our large, semi-aggressive cat outside (he used to be an outside cat for about 7 years, but kept him inside for 3 years after moving) to be an outside cat. Our neighbor's male cat practically lives on our back porch, and has pretty much declared it his territory. The two cats got into a huge fight (rolling around, screeching, the whole bit) right in front of me. When the male cat ran off, my cat went for my arm. I'm not sure if it was his claw or his teeth, but he got me pretty good on the hand. It's in the spot between my palm and my wrist. Right where the hand meets the wrist, in that semi-thick area of skin. It was very small (maybe a 1/4 inch, if even that much?) but pretty deep. I immediately washed it out and applied triple-antibiotic ointment and put a bandaid on. I've been re-treating it with ointment and putting fresh bandaids on about three times a day.
It's been about 30-ish hours since I got the big gash. Almost a few hours after I got it, my arm was very very sore around my wrist, and a little further down. As the night went on, it got extremely painful. It's to a point where it's swollen a little above the cut and about two inches below. It's red all over, from above it, to about three inches below. The red is a smooth, even, light red, and looks like a sunburn.
It's warm to the touch. Not as painful today, but still painful. We talked to a doctor (he didn't see it though) and thought I might have cat scratch fever or cellulitis. I'm doubtful, though. I googled it, and the images look nothing like what I have.
Any idea on why my wrist is so painfully sore/swollen, and why it's red? The red fades all the way almost to the inside of my elbow, maybe an inch below.
Thank you.
