Would you put your best work in a writing contest?

Honestly would you? I want to enter this writing contest. They have a 50,000 word limit. I have this novel that i already started. Its the best and most original idea i have ever came up with. It seems like it would be a sure winner. But if i put it in the contest couldn't it be stolen? And if i put it in the contest i would have to rush it. And then theres a chance it won't be published because i entered it into this contest right? Idk i feel like i don't have any other really great novel ideas. Or at least not anywhere as great as this one. But i really want to win this contest.

check the contest rule about entering: i think it counts as publication, but if it's a great stories i have no doubt another Publisher will want to publish ur work. it happened before to Christopher paolini- he self-publish then the major Publishing company sought him out and asked permission to Publish their own version. so in this case think of the contest as ur self-publishing.

to ur main question....YES i would. it's the best way to put yourself out there.
check the rules, ask the people giving the contest, pay a visit... just be sure for yourself. I'm sure your story will be safe.

Look into the Terms and Conditions to make sure it'll be copywritten.. and if there's no Terms & Conditions, DON'T ENTER IT, it'll most likely be stolen!

Entering it into a secure, legitimate contest by trusted hosts (i.e. Writer's Digest) is an absolutely fantastic way to both get your writing and name attracted by publishers and agents. Even if you don't win, someone can see your work and maybe want to get in contact with you in order to publish it.

I say go for it :)
