For a contest to design a business start up my group decided to do a web business, but I am not 100% sure of the mentality of people out there.
The very vague description of it is that it is a place for online user generated text books. I know that there is wikibooks and some others, but they really fail at the interactiveness of asking people and connecting. Forums arent that good because topics are scattered about and not well organized. We have several really great ideas of how to bring a more human interconectivity to the user generated content specifically aimed at learning a subject. We would obviously need to spend some money in the beginning and pay people to write the base of the text books. but after it gets kicked off, it should be self substaining.
My question is this: I know that it will have to be free for anyone to come in and use and edit. I really dont want to have our revenue model based on advertisements so I was trying to think of ways in which make money.
One thing i was thinking about was to have the ability to "capture" the whole of the text book in a pdf for like about $5-10, and then for the next 6 months, the can get pdf's of the text book for free as content is added and what not. Would you pay for that?
I was also thinking about having the "free" members being like slightly locked down. like maybe they have to look at ads or something, but if you pay $x amount each year, you dont have to look at ads and you have more features.
Advise on how to make money on such a site?
(btw this is just for a school contest)
