People can no longer suspend their disbelief , mainly because CGI is now so "good" that it has a cartoon-like quality that is as jarring as a man in an ape costume.

Nothing changed people's tastes. People's taste have been and probably will always be interesting stories told interestingly, with sympathetic characters.
