Would sucking the venom out of a wound help?

I recently saw a tv show were a woman had been bitten by a venomous rattlesnake. If she didn't seek medical attention right away she could/would die. I've always heard that if you get bit like that, that sucking the venom out of the bite and then spitting it out would help. Is this true? Would it be in vain since you now have the poison in your mouth even if you do spit it out there is still some exposure. Just curious really. My first instict would have been to try to suck some of it out, but would that have been a bigger mistake?
