Would someone explain... well, anything to me about football?

I am not a sports fan, so I know very little about football aside from the following things:

Players wear protective gear, including helmets.
The ball is shaped like Stewie Griffin's head.
Players can kick the ball, pass the ball, and/or run one direction or the other down the field.
If someone somehow gets the ball to one end of the field, they score points for their team.
If they don't, NO POINTS FOR THEM!
There is a field; it is a hundred yards long, and it is bordered by angry chalk that hates you and will get revenge on your team if you cross it.
Tackling is allowed. Strangely, "roughness" does not seem to be, even though the gameplay largely centers around people trying to smash each other into the ground.
There is something called a "first down."
Joe Montana is not Joe Namath's nickname.
They are not "the New York Packers."
Tim Tebow needs to be strapped to a board so someone can brand Matthew 6: 5-6 onto his face.

That is pretty much the extent of my knowledge about the game, and I am perfectly content to keep it that way, but it turns out I am going to need to know something more about it, so can someone please explain to me what the Hell is going on?
