would i be bored in the military?

my friend says that if i joined the navy or the army i would be incredibly bored and it's not like the commercial (well no crap..lol) but that I would spend most of my days on a base in the middle of nowhere or on a foreign country trying to find things to pass the time.
can anybody who is serving or who has served tell me how bored they are, and if they feel like they are wasting their time being in the military?
 
As with many things, the military can be described as "long stretches or boredom interrupted by moments of sheer chaos."

One cannot always be in the middle of the action and even when deployed, many troops find long stretches of down time or slow points in their day, even when outside the wire.
