At the border crossings are there checkpoints? On a close-up internet map it looks like there are residential village streets that cross the border with no apparent crossing. Is crossing that border like driving across a state border here in the US, if you didn't see the sign you wouldn't know? I'll be in Switzerland for a triathlon this summer and I'd like to ride my bicycle to visit a friend that lives several miles away across the border in Germany.
