Would getting an unlocked GSM phone and then a Straight Talk SIM allow me to have greater coverage?

I currently have the Precedent that my husband got me for Christmas, and while it works where I currently am it gets absolutely no service where we are about to move to. I saw on the Straight Talk web site that I can buy an unlocked phone and get a Straight Talk SIM. Does anyone know if an unlocked GSM smart phone would have a bigger coverage area than their current CDMA smart phones?
