With national politics dictated by referenda, could the commoner be trusted with making the right decisions? Or, would our civilization decay into inaction, corruption and chaos? In other words, do we need, always, leaders to represent us?

referendum takes forever, and costs a fortune. If we had direct democracy, we would have half the people running the voting machine and campaigning on every issue.

so yes, it would degrade quality of life.

It depends on the standard of the electorate. This system works well in a small country like Switzerland where there is a well educated, basically conservative electorate.
