--Taxi Driver, After Hours, and Bringing Out the Dead? (The latter two are absolute gems, and they aren't mentioned enough even by many Scorsese fans.)
While Gangs of New York, The Aviator, The Departed, and Shutter Island are terrific films, they're also such big productions. You can tell so much planning went into them, and they were clearly meant to be films with wide appeal and enormous box office potential. I don't mean this as criticism, and I know how presumptuous it sounds, but I get the feeling present-day Scorsese is not just choosing projects for personal reasons, but also to live up to certain awards-season and/or box-office expectations.
I'd love to see him attempt another crazy, small, on-the-streets-of-New-York type movie. Taxi Driver, After Hours, and Bringing Out the Dead are so -alive- with nocturnal energy, with a sense of danger and seediness. Maybe the feeling just isn't there anymore in this post-Giuliani, post-9/11 New York, though.
Bonus Q: After Hours or Bringing Out the Dead--which do you prefer?
Bonus Q2: Favorite film set in New York City?
