Would an Unlocked Phone Work for Verizon?

I was planning to get a new Motorola Droid off ebay and was wondering if it would work for Verizon. Im thinking it would because the original carrier of the phone is Verizon anyways, but I want to be sure before purchasing it. Also, I wouldnt have to buy the data package from Verizon in order for my phone to work too right? I don't want to spend 30 bucks a month for internet when I can get it free through WIFI. If you would like to include anything else you might know associated with this, it would greatly be appreciated! THANKS in advance!!!!

First of all you need to be careful with buying any Verizon or Sprint cell phones off of ebay. Verizon and Sprint uses CDMA network and uses a 12 digit ESN number on the back of their cell phones behind the battery. Each cell phone has a different ESN number.

So if you were to buy a used cell phone from someone on ebay then make sure the ESN number is still good. There are lot of scammers out there who sold Verizon and Sprint cell phones off of ebay and when the person bought the cell phone and tried to activate it, Verizon told them the ESN number on that cell phone was bad because the user of the previous account failed to paid the bill in full and so that cell phone could never be activated again. By that time the person who sold the cell phone had disappear with the money he got from celling the cell phone.

So before you purchase the cell phone on ebay, make sure to get the ESN number off that cell phone and call Verizon to see if that cell phone can be activated.

If everything goes well, the Motorola Droid does require a data plan with Verizon Wireless. There is no way out of it. You will need to get a data plan of 29.99 or 39.99 a month on top of your monthly rate plan.
