Would a Subaru Forester be a good first car?

Im 17 and hopefully getting my first car soon. I was looking at cars around the 5k mark, like small hatchbacks etc (2nd hand). My dad offered to pay another 5k as well because he saw a Subaru Forester (i think about a 2000 or 2002 model). He wants it for the occasional use, but otherwise its mine.

Is it the Forester a good first car? Anything I should know about it?
I'm male living in Australia if that helps
