Would a national sales tax be considered a tax-hike on the lower and middle class?

It's a tax on everybody,so it is of course a tax on the middle and lower class.

What they will more likely go for is Value Added Taxes, taxes directly on the producers of products. These taxes will of course be passed on to the consumers, but they will be a "hidden tax".Most people will not understand that their higher prices for products are because of taxes.

They are already talking about doing this with Health Care,by funding it with higher taxes on Health Insurers and Medical Device Producers.

Yes because it is blind to economic status, race, sexual orientation, religious views, etc. I thought that this is what we stood for as a nation.

Right now, the lower class doesn't pay much in taxes.

Sales taxes are considered regressive taxes because the disproportionately affect the poor and lower classes of society. Lower classes spend a much higher percentage of their income (in fact, almost all of it) than middle and upper classes, and are therefore are subjected to a greater percentage of taxation. This is based on the percentage of income being taxed.

I do not have any figures, but it is possible that middle and upper classes pay just as much, if not more, total money in sales taxes. You would have to look up the figures on that...
