Would a lawyer have a metal shredder?

My fiance contacted a lawyer after I found terrible things on his computer. He told me he took it to his lawyer who destroyed it in a metal shredder. Do lawyers do stuff like that?
He just took in the dismantled hard drive. The files on the drive would have landed him in jail.
