Would a car with worn brake pads pass state inspection?

The brakes in my car have been squeaking for ages but have recently (within the last month) gotten a lot worse. I think the brake pads are worn down but we can't afford to change them right now. However, I have to get my car inspected this month and I was wondering if my car would fail because of this?

I live in NC if that makes any difference.

Also, if I did get them changed, how much should it cost at a mechanic to get it done?
 
you know it only cost like 30 bucks to buy pads my wife does her own brake jobs an dknowing when or if they need it saves you money buy not having to buy brake rotors and being able to stop and not drive into a wall or large truck so you say its been a long time then you spending more to repair but it just depends on what shop you call id do it at home for half the price but som ewhere a round 100 buck to 300 buck to have it done easy to call three shops could do it your self with few tools not much harder than changing a flat tire and not likely to pass if they hear is grinding costing you more money shouldnt neve rride with bad brakes when it cost little to do it yourself and once you learn how easy you wil never pay to have it done i showed my wife how and now shes a brake expert and does her own cost about 30 bucks for pads and about a hour work shop price about 200 and about hour or longer if you have to wait might be all day you can find most car repairs online even videos of how to do most easy knowing what is wrong hard part replacing a apart not hard keeping car in top shape cheaper than letting it go and it breaking down think about it now ok what happens if your brake fail to stop you what if you kil someone or your self for 30 bucks take care of your car and it takes care of you

you should pass your inspection. But if you find a mechanic willing to do it at your house it would be cheaper. brakes cost 20 dollars and maybe another 30 dollars for the labor. Or take it somewhere and get it done for like 60 or more
