I might be back in Germany around that time frame.. if so, I'll probably drive down... Free pass to everyone outside of EU? Awesome!

Hey triblackville let me know if you decide for sure. If I went it would be a plus to find someone else going. You done any foreign travelling before?

Anyone: How much trouble is getting passport? Estimates on how much would this trip would cost?

Passport 4 to 8 weeks. If all your papers are in order. Start now to be sure.

I would say about $800 to 1000 for flight, stay in a tent at the track with all the euros (why not get the whole expereance?)
I think with food and Euro-rail done on the cheap, another $1000. You could spend more, but why?

Yup, what Stimacsays said:

Passport is around $175 (check with USPS), but yes, it can be between 1-3 months. I wouldn't spend extra dough on "expedited"...

Keep in mind 1 EURO = 1.44 USD ( +/- 5 cents).

As for Italy, traveling is quite easy (well connected); however, you're royally f@cked if the union decides to go on a strike... They will announce a strike on such and such day and that's it -- no public transportation (certain routes).

If you decide to rent a car, MAKE SURE you CHECK ENTIRE car for scratches... I cannot stress this enough. They will rip you another a$$hole if they find a scratch (this is true all over EU). Trust me, I spend the last 6 months traveling back to the mother-continent.

Don't want to scare ya... just keep in mind you're in a different country. If I spoke fluent Italian, I would honestly move to Italy in a heartbeat.

You could drop the said, and just go with Stimacsays. That was the point of my picking my name.

With you on this. Only I would just spend 3 month a year as a retire.

Hey miller i will defnitely tell you if i decide to go. Ive been over seas once have a buddy in germany from high skool ( he is actuallly visiting for xmas) so might just have another excuse to go across the pond. Yes you should get started on your passport if you plan on going plus it nice to have a passport

Yeah ... I've been meaning to get a passport for several years now. I'll have to start on that after the holidays. As a matter of fact I'll make that my new years resolution!... haha that way I won't even think about making wt. loss a resolution... cause that never works out! So all of you are my witnesses (new year resolution ~ passport)... so any & all are welcome to give me hell until I do it. BTW what's it going to cost me?... cause I've also found some 1-piece leathers that I want to purchase after Christmas.

Asking this question w/o any details is like asking how much will it cost me to buy a car in California?

Some things to think about:
A) How long are you going for (wkend, a week, 2wks, a week but flying in-between the wkends)

B) Where / To am I flying? Given you're in MS, it might be cheaper to drive to AL/TN and catch a flight...

C) Will you rent a car or will you catch a train once in ITL?

D) Where are you going to stay? Only one city/place or multi? Also, do you care about 1 start or 5 star hotel? Maybe a hostel?

Check out sidestep.com for flights. I did a quick search from Columbus, MS to Rome, IT using 6/10 - 6/18 and the cost of a flight alone was $1,450; however, flying from Birmingham, AL to Rome was $1,220.

Also, Hotels.com is a pretty decent site and they do offer one of the best prices. If you stay in hostel, it can be from 30 Euro's ($50) a night... Hotel will most likely run you around $90/night

Car rental is around 300 Euros/week (Hertz is among expensive ones)... where train ticket is sold by zones and time (duration). Most likely around $100 for the ticket (see http://www.italiarail.com/ I think you want Rome to Ancona).

So for a week + food (NOT CHEAP), you're looking approx $2,300.
