Working out question (Gym)?

I have friends that do different systems of working out in the gym

One of them does, just as an example, different muscle groups everyday with a break between every cycle. So for example, he does Bi-ceps/tri-ceps one day, chest/shoulder the next, back/abs the next and a break the next day, and he repeats this. Every month or so, he would change around the orders, so chest/shoulder, then bi's/tri's and then backs/abs.

Now I have another friend who does whole body work-out and rests a day or two and does the same thing.

I personally think that the different muscle groups everyday would be more effective, but I'm no Arnold Schwarzeniger so could someone please enlighten me and probably suggest a more efficient/effective method?
